Auction Analysis #1: Exaggerating in Your Auction
Written by flipflop on July 2, 2011 – 4:12 am -
This is the first analysis we’ll be doing in our Auction Analysis Series where we take live or past auctions from real websites auction marketplace out there (Flippa, DP, WF, eBay, etc.) and analyze what the sellers might have done wrong (or right) in their auctions and see how we can improve and learn from that.
So in the very first analysis in this series, we take this auction here to analyze: Auction To Analyze #1
The Niche
The website that the seller is selling in that auction is a “blog” supposedly about Sony’s upcoming handheld game console named Playstation Vita (or PS Vita). First off, Playstation Vita is a new gadget set to be launched at the end of this year, a gaming device that has been dubbed the revolutionary gaming device that will change anyone’s gaming experience. So, in short, it’s quite a hot niche. People say early birds always get their share, so people that are quick to tap into this niche before it gets hotter (in this case the launch date of this device, about 6 months ahead) will have the most advantages.
The website
And then we look at the website itself, nothing too fancy, nothing really stands out, the design is average, but doesn’t really matter, seems like it has a little bit of contents. So we go back to the auction to find out more about this website, to see if the contents are unique/original or if they’re copied from somewhere else and such.
The auction
First of all, the auction finished with no bids, not even a single bid placed, even with starting bid as low as just $1. Where did it go wrong?
When we look at the auction’s description to find out more about the website, we are greeted by this line : “This isn’t some goofy website that little kids are making with free website generators or WordPress trying to make a quick million.” Yeah, but a look further to the description and we immediately know that this is exactly what the auction and the website is all about; kids making goofy websites trying to make quick money off Flippa.
Basically the seller is telling us that he is busy with family, work, AND college, so he doesn’t have time to update this website anymore, yet this website has only been around for 2 weeks. Sounds like he quickly built the website with Dreamweaver hoping to sell it quickly in two weeks time. Of course this is not a big deal, if the website itself has real value that is. Read more »
